It’s not always easy for men to express themselves.
Have you ever noticed that when you ask a male friend how he’s doing, the answer is usually “I’m okay”?
We live in a world of guy nods, handshake hugs, and giving each other shit for fun. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it can create an environment where it’s unacceptable to be anything other than “okay.”
As men, we are socialized to be strong, silent, protective, and hard-working. We’re expected to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders without comment or complaint.
None of these traits are bad in and of themselves, but they take a toll.
Living this way frequently leads to isolation and shame.
Many men end up feeling disconnected and alone. They are limited when it comes to having close relationships with others.
Often, we end up resentful and shame ourselves for feeling weak and becoming irritable and angry when compassion and understanding are most needed. We react this way because we silently need to support others at the expense of our wants and needs.
The truth is that men don’t do this on purpose. We don’t know that our needs aren’t being met as we struggle with understanding our emotions.
There is a way forward.
Therapy can support you in understanding your emotions and developing healthier relational skills with the people you care about. We must explore the emotional experience beyond the basic feelings of happiness, sadness, fear, and anger. And this framework allows for a deeper, more truthful therapeutic experience.
We know therapy isn’t natural for everyone, so we will take it at your pace and find approaches that work for you. There is no magic cure, but we promise to make it as painless as possible. It might even be fun and invigorating at times!
